In fact, in 2002 the National Institutes of Health added UV radiation to the list of identified carcinogens in America. People who work outdoors, babies, senior citizens and those with fair skin and light-colored eyes are at higher risk for skin cancer.

Another summertime danger is insect bites. Mosquitoes, ants, spiders, bees and fleas are particularly obnoxious - and they are everywhere. Their bites can cause symptoms ranging from swelling, pain and itchiness to life-threatening allergic reactions.

To protect yourself from these dangers, follow the ABCs of summer skin care:

* Avoid the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is at its brightest. Take your daily walk in the morning or late afternoon. Many insects breed in water, so stay away from stagnant pools and soggy grass.

* Block sunlight with a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher. Apply sunblock half an hour before going out and reapply every couple of hours.

* Cover up. Wear loose-fitting, tightly woven clothes that reach your wrists and ankles; UV-protected sunglasses; and hats with 4-inch brims to cover eyes, ears, scalp and neck. Insects are attracted to bright colors and strong perfumes, so dress neutrally and go easy on scents.

Create A Better Space By Organizing Your Pocketbook

So, you want to get organized. Have you ever thought that one of the best places to start is your handbag, pocketbook or purse? Call it what you may, but they are all intended for the same purpose. When you leave the house each day, this bag tends to be your life line. It contains all the things you need and then some. For a lot of busy moms, it has "everything in it but the kitchen sink". (If it could fit, it might have been put in there too!)

The question you want to ask yourself, first and foremost, is - "Do I really need all this stuff?" More than likely, the answer is "NO!"

The handbag or purse tends to be the dumping spot for everything you acquire on a daily basis. The problem is that it tends to stay there. The stuff just accumulates and accumulates. That is not the intended use of this accessory, believe it or not.

How to we fix this situation? First, empty your entire purse onto a table. Make sure you have enough space to spread out the contents.

Then, grab your keys. Put them aside. You will definitely be putting them back in again.

Next, grab your wallet. As you do, go through it quickly. It should only contain money (its original intended purpose), your debit card(s) and credit cards that are used regularly (the rest stay at home), health insurance cards, drivers license, vehicle registration. Remove all of those receipts from the stores and MAC machine, putting them in the location where you pay your bills. (This should be done at the end of each day).

Next, set aside medications that you need while you are away from the house, your reading and/or sunglasses, a pocket checkbook if you use one, a pad of paper and pencil/pen, cell phone, your calendar/blackberry or other hand-held device you use to keep track of your appointments, etc. These are all necessities.

Lastly, get a small zippered bag (cosmetic size) and put your lip stick and make-up you use to touch up during the day, hand cream, gum/mints, an extra set of house and car keys.

That should do it. All the other items do not need to be returned to the purse.

The tendency is to use a large handbag to carry all the stuff. Try to downsize to a smaller size so you will be forced to carry less - only what you really need. Put smaller items in pockets of the purse to locate them easily.

Finally, make a point to go through your handbag once a week to clean it out. I guarantee you will find candy or gum wrappers, miscellaneous notes or receipts and other things you acquire along the way.

The next time you shop for a handbag, keep in mind the features you need it to have so that it can function for you. Less mess is less stress.

Easy Cheesy Asparagus Bake and Mushroom and Asparagus Risotto
Asparagus are in Season and you will love these two recipes I've chosen to feature. The Easy cheesy asparagus bake is a delish, it's easy and fun to make. I like the combination of red peppers with asparagus I feel it completely brings out the sweetness in the asparagus. Then we have the cheese, which I feel makes this dish a special and unique meal for the entire family to enjoy. Give them something new to try! As for the Mushroom and Asparagus risotto I say: " no other two vegetables could bring out the best in a classic risotto".

1 (10 1/2 oz.) can Del Monte tender green asparagus cut spears or fresh cooked
1/4 c. red pepper, chopped
1/3 c. mayonnaise
1/3 c. mild Cheddar cheese, shredded
1/4 c. green onions, sliced
1 egg white, beaten until stiff

Drain asparagus, reserving a few pieces for garnish, (if desired) and place remaining asparagus in shallow 1 quart baking dish with red pepper. Combine mayonnaise, cheese and green onions. Fold in egg white. Spread over asparagus. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until heated through. Makes 4 servings.

1 cup arborio rice

1/2 cup white wine

32 oz vegetable stock (or water or chicken stock)

1 onion, small diced (about 8 oz)

1 clove garlic, minced

10 oz mixed mushrooms, sliced (I used button mushrooms, shiitakes, and portobellos)

1/2 lb asparagus spears, cut into 2" pieces

1 Tbsp plus 2 Tbsp olive oil

1.5 Tbsp Earth Balance vegan butter (or real butter) for finish

Yield: 4 ea-8 oz portions

Heat the stock in a small stock pot to a simmer. You will want it hot when you add it to

the rice, but it does not need to be kept boiling.

Saute the mushrooms in a hot pan with 2 Tbsp of olive oil. I did this in two batches so as

not to crowd the pan and allow the mushrooms to get nicely browned. If you put too

many mushrooms in the pan at one time, the pan will not stay hot, and the

mushrooms will release all their water, effectively poaching instead of roasting to a nice

brown color. Set aside for later.

Quickly blanch the asparagus pieces, about 2 minutes, until they are cooked, but still

firm. Set aside.

Heat 1 Tbsp. olive oil in a large heavy bottomed saute pan or pot. Add in the onions and

cook until they are soft, about 4-5 minutes. Don't let them get too brown. Add in the rice

and cook it with the onions until it becomes lightly toasted, but again, not brown. Add the

minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more. Add the wine and stir until it is completely

absorbed and evaporated (the rice absorbs the flavor and the alcohol cooks off).

Ladle in 1 cup of warm stock and stir. Reduce the heat to low and continue cooking until

the stock is absorbed. Continue adding the stock, slowly, 1/2 cup at a time, as the rice

cooks and absorbs it. Keep stirring every few minutes to help release the starch and

develop the creamy texture. This will also prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the

pan. As it gets dry, add more stock.

Once most of the stock is absorbed, check the texture of the rice. It should be al dente,

slightly firm in the center, but not crunchy. If it's still too firm for your taste, add more

stock or water.

Fold in the cooked mushrooms and asparagus. Add in the vegan (or real butter). Season

with salt and freshly ground black pepper. If you'd like to add some freshly grated

parmesan, go ahead. Enjoy!

It's my belief that you should always be able to look at old photos and distinguish one year from another by just looking at your hairstyle: "Oh look! My hair was dark and in a funky angular bob, so that was 2009!" What are the hottest hair trends and ideas for 2011? What hair colors are top and in?

So far, it appears that the hottest hair trend so far in 2011 is long hair. I think long hair, especially if it's down past your shoulders, is going to hold strong. A lot of celebrities are sporting long hair again, especially slightly wavy hair parted down the center, with the absence of bangs. Think of hair like Kate Hudson or Drew Barrymore, who have been sporting this look for years.

Short hair remains popular. Of course there are a lot of celebrities that are opting for shorter hair, and are pulling it off with grace. Such celebrities as Jeniffer Aniston, Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes love bob haircut. I love Michelle Williams short cropped pixie cut, and it added to her stylish simplicity at the 2011 Oscars. If you lead a super busy life, then considering going short is a good choice, of course only if you have the hair texture that will support it.

Super curly hair and super thick hair need not apply for a short hair job. In my opinion, 2011 will see a lot of short hairstyles, but they'll be super short styles with low maintenance. I think that the days of shorter hair styles that have tons going on are over, so we won't see short cuts with spiky pieces, angled pieces, and drastically long pieces in the front while the back is cut close. Michelle Williams and Halle Berry's timeless crop are good examples 2011's short hair trend.

Of course if you're afraid to chop all of your hair off, you can always change your look drastically just by dying it. I think colors are going to be warming up this year, so we're going to see a lot of dark, rich browns and warmer blonde colors. For the more adventurous, bold colors that have shades of blue, red, pink and purple are going to be hot as well.

[1] Re-use your bath towels. Our family uses 2 towels a week per person, changing them out on Wednesdays and Saturdays. After use, they hang on a hook on the back of the bathroom door, so they can dry between showers. Purchase the best quality bath towels you can afford. I have towels from Sears that I bought 20 years ago, that are still in good shape.

[2] Buy only white for towels and bedding. Having the same color will decrease the time you need in folding and pairing up sets. Get your color punch from bedspreads, throw pillows or other accessories.

[3] Store bed sheet sets in a pillow case, that way you have all you need to refresh your beds in one place.

[4] Pre-treat stains caused by cooking or body oils with dish washing liquid or shampoo. This gets even the WORST grease stain out of fabrics. Pre-treat stains as soon as you notice them. Do not dry garment that is still stained, re-treat and wash again.

[5] Only use drain cleaner when necessary. To avoid costly plumber bills clean your drains weekly with denture cleaners. Drop two denture tablets down your drain, slowly add 2 cups of boiling water, wait 5 minutes, then flush with hot water for a few minutes. I haven't needed a plumber in the ten years I have been doing this.

[6] Use as little prepared food as possible. Wash, dry and then tear up the head of lettuce when you get home from the grocery store so it will be available when you need it. You can also dice onions, peppers and other salad makings ahead of time, then store in the refrigerator. It cuts down the time to make a salad from 20 minutes to 2 minutes. Add a protein [chicken, steak, pork] to turn your salad into a meal.

[7] Before going grocery shopping make a list of what you have on hand. It stops over buying of unneeded items. Plan a weekly menu and try to use the items that you have on hand as the basis for several meals. This is especially important when you have fresh produce that will otherwise go to waste.

[8] Use 3-way bulbs whenever possible. You can adjust the watt usage, thus you save money on electricity.

[9] Learn to make small clothing repairs. Anyone can sew on a button or shorten a hem. It saves money and gives you confidence.

[10] Check clothing labels before buying. Only buy dry cleaning items when nothing else will do. I have seen wedding dresses that can be machine washed, so keep looking for that perfect washable clothing item. In the long run, it will save you money.

Bush, set to air on NBC tonight, March 28, 2011. The televised extravaganza, which took place at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., honored the President’s dedication to encouraging the value of service and volunteerism in the United States, bringing together United States presidents: President and Mrs. George W.
