Fall Is Here - Enjoy The Season's Bright Orange Pumpkins in Bars and Pie

One of the best parts of Fall is the beautiful and colorful displays of pumpkins. Whether at the Farmer's Markets or Grocer's Produce Department, the colorful pumpkin displays remind us of wonderful fall desserts. Actually, pumpkin is a healthy food that we should use year-round. So don't relegate your pumpkin recipes to your seasonal files. Here are two great recipes for using pumpkin. The first is my favorite Pumpkin Bars with a delicious Cream Cheese Frosting. (If you are really trying to eat healthy, you may want to omit the frosting. Ugh!)

MY FAVORITE PUMPKIN BARS

4 eggs

1 2/3 cups sugar

1 cup oil

1 can (16-oz) pumpkin

2 cups flour

1 tsp salt

2 tsp baking powder

2 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp baking soda

In a large mixing bowl, beat together the eggs, sugar, oil (I now use only canola), and pumpkin until light and fluffy.

In another bowl, stir together the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and cinnamon; add to the pumpkin mixture and mix thoroughly. Spread the batter in an ungreased 15 x 10 x 1-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool. When cool, make the Cream Cheese Frosting, below, ice the bars. Cut into bars of desired size to serve.

CREAM CHEESE FROSTING:

1 pkg (3-oz) cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup butter, softened

1 tsp vanilla

2 cups sifted powdered sugar

Cream together cream cheese and butter. Stir in the vanilla. Add the powdered sugar a little at a time, beating well until mixture is smooth.

FAMILY TRADITION PUMPKIN PIE

This is the pumpkin pie recipe that my mother used and the same one I have always used. This is one of my son's favorite pies and has also become a favorite of my college aged grandson.

1 cup white sugar

1 tablespoon flour

1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice

1/8 teaspoon salt

1 can (16-17 oz) pumpkin

2 eggs, beaten

1 can (12-oz) evaporated milk

1 (9-inch) unbaked pastry shell

In a large bowl, combine the sugar, flour, pumpkin pie spice, and salt. Mix in the pumpkin. Add eggs and evaporated milk. When combined well, pour into the unbaked pastry shell. Bake in a 450 degree oven for 10 minutes. Lower the heat to 350 degrees and bake another 40 to 45 minutes until the filling is firm. A butter knife inserted in the center will come out clean when the pie is done. Top each piece with a dollop of whipped cream when serving.

Keep in mind that cutting someone from the list doesn’t mean they aren’t getting a gift from you, however. These are just the gifts you’re setting money aside for. You can always give them a homemade gift or card.

Some credit card companies offer special rewards to their customers during the winter holidays. These could be bonus rewards points, special discounts, or even free gift cards! A free gift card could mean one less gift to buy.

So, look up your credit card rewards program and see what’s being offered. Then, write a reminder to yourself on your Christmas shopping list so you don’t forget your credit card at home.

5. Stay accountable for what you spend.
Sticking to your budget is, of course, the hardest part. One way to make it easier is by recruiting other people to hold you accountable for what you spend.

Your partner can be a good choice, as long as they are a responsible spender. Once you decide on a Christmas budget together, you can resolve to help each other stay on track.

To make it easier to keep track of purchases, West Virginia University’s Ron Hatfield recommends using just one credit card for Christmas spending. If it helps you, put your statement or receipts up on the fridge. If you know your family will see them, you’ll be less tempted to splurge.

If you do use a liner, make sure it is a close match to your natural lip colour. If you are feeling "grey", invest in good- quality fake tan for the summer – a healthy alternative to the real thing. Choose one that applies easily and also has granules to help to exfoliate the skin at the same time. Try Lancaster Quick Action Self Tan Spray, Guerlain Self Tanning Emulsion, or Estee Lauder Self Action Tanning Lotion. To add a sun-kissed glow or rosy-cheeks look, soft creme blushers are another good buy. Try Nars Multiple Stick.

Soft eye pencils are a definite beauty buy to invest in this season. Now available in gold, purple, silver, pale blue and green, they are great for either smudging gently over the entire eye area or just applied at the outer corners of your eyes to give a lift. Take a look at these before going for the black or brown option.

When applying colour to your eyelashes, try using colourless clear mascara or, alternatively, have your eyelashes tinted: anything to avoid that artificial clogged-up look. Eyebrows give a frame to the eyes, so unless you have a steady hand and good eyesight, get them professionally plucked. When selecting an eyebrow pencil or powder, it is best to choose a shade lighter than your natural eyebrow colour.

For luscious lips this summer, go for lip gloss. Nineties gloss is not just for sheen, it also protects and conditions. Available in a variety of sassy colours, it is also versatile – use as a highlight over lipstick.

Nail colours have done a complete turnaround since the craze for deep, vampy, blood shades. This season the shades are a brighter shade of pale: not subtle clears but deep pastel rose, peach, lilac, blue and even pure white in either matt or metallic. And don't forget to attend to your toenails, to complement this year's mules and sexy slingback shoes.

YOUR STEP BY STEP GUIDE

Good makeup should highlight your natural face, not create a painted mask over it. Makeup artist Sally Kvalheim guides you through this model's transformation (from left to right, above).

Step 1: THE BASE. Use a good moisturiser to prime skin. Try Estee Lauder's Nutritious, or Elizabeth Arden's Skin Illuminating Complex.

Step 2: THE FOUNDATION. Keep foundation light, using a moist cosmetic sponge, or a light concealer under the eyes. Try Yves Saint Laurent's Touche Eclat. Finish with a dusting of translucent powder.

Step 3: THE BLUSH. Use a cream blusher. Apply to the apple of your cheeks, blending in with middle finger.

Step 4: THE EYES. Define eyes and bring out their colour with a neutral eyeshadow all over the eyelid. Blend in a mid tone on the lower eyelid and use a darker tone on the outer corner, blending into socket line. Use a soft eyeliner to draw a line under lower lashes, smudge in. Use a light coat of clear or colour mascara.

Step 5: THE LIPS. Prime lips with lip balm. Use soft colours with a lip brush, or a stain of stronger colour. Finish with a dab of lip gloss.

As you probably gathered from my August blog "Suits For Interviews", I am not one to encourage too much creativity within the realm of dressing for a job interview. Sure, I think there's quite a bit of room for creativity in pretty much every other area of a man's wardrobe. But when it comes to a job interview, there is a certain set of rules that every man should follow. This is to ensure that the interviewer will be focused on you and your stellar qualifications, not distracted by what you are wearing.



The basic rules of color for dressing for an interview are:



A two-piece suit in navy or charcoal gray.

A button down dress shirt in either white or a light pastel color.

Clean, polished dress shoes in a dark color to match your suit.

A solid, diagonally striped, or other simply patterned tie.



That said, what color tie is best to wear to an interview? This is one area of your outfit that you do have a bit of flexibility. The color of your tie can be selected depending on what type of message you want to convey about yourself. Subliminal messaging with color is known to have a strong impact on our brains, and our decision making process. For example, blue is a color that suppresses our appetite, while red and yellow rev it up. This is why fast food restaurants such as McDonald's and Hardee's incorporate red and yellow into their logos; meaning, in all aspects of life, colors can relay a strong subliminal message. Here's what you can say with the color of your tie:



Blue:



Blue is a calm and soothing color that means "peace." It is a color that reflects persistence. Try wearing a blue tie with red accents if you want to be seen as a manager or team leader.



Yellow:



Yellow is a color that we associate with the sun. Because of this, we associate it with warmth and vitality. Wear a yellow tie if you want to appear approachable.



Green:



A green tie symbolizes growth and rebirth. It is a good idea to wear a green tie if you want to portray yourself as a good team player.



Red:



Red is the color most chosen by extroverts and comes across as bold and dynamic. It can also boost your confidence if you are feeling a bit unsure of yourself.



Brown:



Brown is a color that appears very down to earth. Wear a brown tie if you want to say "I can get the job done.



Pink:



Pink comes across as upbeat and friendly. You can wear a pink tie if you want to appear slightly offbeat, or if you are interviewing for a customer service position.



Orange:



Frank Sinatra once said, "Orange is the happiest color." Indeed, orange appears very cheerful and bright. Wear it if you want to appear very positive.







Two good color combinations to wear to your interview are:



A navy suit and a light yellow shirt with a blue tie, or vice versa. Blue says "honesty" while yellow says "energetic." Together, this color combination says upbeat and cheerful.





A charcoal suit with a white shirt and a dark blue and or burgundy tie. There is a reason that this look is often favored by politicians. It is a color combination that says "authoritative." Wear it if you want to look like a leader and a decision maker.
