Cruising the Caribbean, surely one of the most relaxing holidays you can think of. A cruise to this beautiful destination is bound to surprise, intrigue and delight; with its picture postcard perfect beaches, white sands, azure seas and swaying palm trees. This unique ambiance has helped the Caribbean become one of the worlds top travel destinations. There is one sticking point for many though, and that's the choice of Caribbean cruise destination, this article takes a look at some of the best Caribbean areas.

The Dominican Republic

First up, and possibly the most popular Caribbean destination, is the Dominican Republic. This impressive cruise destination draws crowds from all over the world and with good reason. Located on the island of La Hispaniola, this mainly Spanish speaking country is well known for its colonial capital, Santa Domingo. The island features some of the highest peaks in the Caribbean, with its mountainous landscape, and is home to several national parks.

Barbados

Another Caribbean location that's well known is the island of Barbados, one of the worlds top surfing destinations. It's not only the sport that attracts visitors though; the island also boasts a rich history, with many of the towns on the island featuring fascinating museums. The island also packs the traditional blend of white beaches and lush landscape as well as the comforts of the modern day life; in towns such as the island capital, Bridgetown.

Jamaica

If you're looking for the traditional 'laid back' Caribbean experience, then you should take a visit to Jamaica; the very epitome of laid back Caribbean life. Jamaica is often seen as one of the ultimate Caribbean destination to kick back and relax during the day, then head out and party the night away. The Bahamas

Another world famous Caribbean cruise destination; the Bahamas is an archipelago of around 700 islands and acts as a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. Famous for its crystal clear waters, pristine white sands and beautiful landscapes; the Bahamas have long been seen as one of the Caribbean's top destinations.

St. Lucia

Finally we end up with something a little more active, the island of St. Lucia; know world wide as one of the best destinations for diving and snorkelling. The island is surrounded by rich coral reefs, teeming with sea life and thus makes for a fascinating place to explore the underwater world.

Anyone who follows my blogs or articles knows I love soup! Soups are the best food in the world in my opinion. So bear with me as I share more soup recipes for your pleasure. Try this Basic Chicken Noodle Soup that cooks in your crockpot or slowcooker while you are busy or away. Oyster Stew is not for everyone but if you are fond of oysters, give this simple stew a try. The Mushroom Bisque is from my diabetic blog but is not a "diabetic" recipe.

BASIC CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP

2 bone-in chicken breasts, skinned

1 onion, chopped

3 celery stalks, sliced

2 carrots, sliced

6 sprigs fresh parsley

2 garlic cloves, peeled

1 bay leaf

1 tsp dried thyme or 1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

2 cartons (32-oz each) low-sodium chicken broth

1 1/2 cups egg noodles

1/4 cup chopped fresh dill, optional

In a 5 or 6 -quart slow cooker or crockpot combine the chicken, onion, celery, carrots, parsley, garlic, bay leaf, thyme, salt and pepper. Pour the chicken broth over the mixture. Cover and cook on high for 4 to 5 hours or low for 8 to 10 hours.

Remove the parsley, garlic, and bay leaf using a slotted spoon; discard. Transfer the chicken to a cutting board; let stand for 10 minutes or until cool enough to handle. Remove the bones and discard. Cut the chicken into bite-size pieces.

While chicken cools, cook the noodles according to the package directions. Stir the chicken back into the cooker along with the prepared noodles. Replace lid and cook on high until the chicken is hot, approximately 5 minutes.

To serve, sprinkle with the dill if desired.

OYSTER STEW

1/4 cup butter

1 pint fresh oysters

2 cups milk

1/2 cup light cream

1 tsp salt

dash of freshly ground black pepper

Melt the butter in a small saucepan. Add the oysters including the liquor and cook while stirring over low heat just until edges start to boil.

In another saucepan, heat the milk and cream. Stir in the salt, pepper, and oysters.

Yield: 4 cups

MUSHROOM BISQUE

3/4 lb fresh mushrooms, sliced

1 garlic clove, minced

1/3 cup onion, finely chopped

1/2 cup butter

2 tbsp fresh lemon juice

4 tbsp flour

2 tsp salt

4 cups chicken broth

1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper

2 cups low-fat cream

fresh chopped parsley

In a 2-quart saucepan, melt the butter; add the mushrooms, garlic, and onion sauteeing 5 minutes. Add the lemon juice. Blend in the flour then gradually stir in the broth. Add the salt and pepper. Cook soup, stirring constantly, until the soup is slightly thickened. Stir in the cream, heat thoroughly, but do not boil. Garnish with the chopped parsley.

Yield: 4 to 6 servings.

Colour is another factor. Darker colors would be more durable and show less wear. Brighter colors make a statement and attract more attention. Lighter colors could show wear more quickly.

Believe it or not, you should also consider your body type when purchasing a handbag. Oversize bags are not complimentary to short women. Your best bet is a medium sized bag or smaller bags like a clutch. While bigger handbags compliment the more plus size body type versus a medium handbag as it will make them look disproportionate. If you are a tall woman, go for a rounder bigger bag. It will make you look slimmer and not as tall.

Designer or imitation? Your bank account will probably be the one to decide on this one.

And not to leave the men out. The "messenger" style bag is used by a lot of men. This is a medium size bag that has a flap in the front. This type of bag is great for holding laptops. Most of these bags have a long strap that makes it more comfortable.

Fifth Avenue is renowned as being one of the most prestigious and expensive streets in the world. It is located in central Manhattan and stretches from 143rd street in Harlem all the way to Washington Square. Fifth Avenue is known primarily as a shopping district. Many of the most famous and fashionable companies have locations located along Fifth Avenue, and it is frequented by both tourists and famous individuals alike. But Fifth Avenue is not merely a shopping district. Most of the retail establishments are located between 49th and 59th street, but as you travel along Fifth Avenue you will come across many beautiful residential condos and apartments as well as numerous museums and other tourist attractions. It is definitely one of the most highly trafficked tourist centers in New York City.

Many different brand-name stores have locations on Fifth Avenue. Most are located closely together and include well known and highly fashionable brands such as Lous Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Bergdorf-Goodman, Ferragamo, and Versace. Whether you go with a classic take on steak or try something a little more avant-garde, the right recipe will enhance any cut of steak. Grilling and broiling are just a couple of possibilities for preparing steak. These quick, simple steak recipes will broaden your repertoire beyond the usual meat-and-potatoes basics. The right steak recipes will take your steak from good to great!

Steak au Poivre

Poivre is French for pepper, and that's the main flavoring of the creamy sauce at the heart of this elegant steak dish. Prepare your steaks as usual; covering the meat with foil after it's cooked so it rests as you prepare the pepper sauce. Crush two tablespoons of whole black peppercorns and a tablespoon of green peppercorns in a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. Dice a whole shallot and saut� it in butter, then add the crushed spices to the mixture. Cook it over medium heat until the shallots become tender, about four or five minutes, then add a cup of heavy cream and salt to taste. Reduce the sauce until it browns and thickens enough to coat the spoon. Serve the sauce over or alongside the steak.

Cajun Steak

New Orleans is rightly famous for its food, and while the port city serves up plenty of seafood, it also knows how to handle a great steak. Make a marinade of enough vegetable oil to coat the steaks, paprika, cayenne pepper, dried thyme, a dash of allspice, diced onions and diced green peppers. Soak the steaks overnight in the mixture, then cook the steaks as desired. Top the steaks with a dab of butter before serving.

Herbed Butter Steak

One of the easiest steak recipes is also one of the best. Chefs rely on compound butter to make their recipes sing, and you can do the same. Cook your steak however you like, then add herbed butter just before you serve it. Make your own butter a day in advance by mixing a stick of room-temperature butter with chopped parsley, chives, finely minced garlic, dill, smoked paprika or any other flavors you enjoy.

Korean Bulgogi Steak

Traditionally, Korean bulgogi is thinly sliced and served with rice, but you can use this magnificently flavorful marinade for whole, uncut steaks as well. Combine half a cup of soy sauce, a tablespoon of dark sesame oil, three cloves of minced garlic, half a teaspoon of grated fresh ginger and chopped green onions to taste. Add red pepper flakes and a tablespoon or two of toasted sesame seeds. Let the steaks marinate in the mixture for four to six hours or overnight before cooking. This recipe works especially well with the smokiness of grilling over charcoal.

Whichever steak recipe you choose, make it your own by tweaking the spices and herbs. Add a little tarragon here or some cumin there. You can't go wrong with a great steak.

It's been a while since I wrote something in this series and I decided that the holiday season is a good time to write one about looking good on a candlelight dinner date. Now that the holidays and the year end are near, people are feeling more relaxed than usual. Bonuses are given out and I suppose this means higher chances of you getting asked out! So how should you dress up so that if someone came and took a picture of you, you'd look picture perfect?

1) Makeup

Play up your most important feature. Follow the rule to enhance and bring it out, while toning down the rest. However, not too much makeup should be used, because honestly, guys prefer women who look presentable - not scary. Don't head out to a candlelight dinner with too much glitter on the eyes - as if going for a hen's night in Vegas - even though you'd want your date to be able to see your eyes under the dim lighting. If the place you're going to has lighting that's too dark, it's the wrong place. Skip the red lips if it's your first dinner together because although it's sexy, it can scare some guys away. However, make sure you wear a long wearing lipstick or risk having to touch up regularly throughout the meal. A simple evening smoky eye with long lashes should do the trick. Nothing too heavy - remember this. You don't need shadowing of the cheek hollows either - just highlighting your cheekbones will do; Candlelight can give you facial features you never knew you had.

2) Let Your Hair Down

It's a dinner date. So, it should be relaxed, chilled, and fun. It's a time when you and your guy spend some hours getting to know each other better. Let your hair down. Let him see how you normally look when you're not on the job. Of course, do style it nicely - it's a date after all. Curl it, straighten it, volumise it. Whatever it is, do something to show that you take care of your looks even when you're just being you. In other words, show him your feminine side. Leave the hair clips and hair bands at home. If you've got a fringe that gets in the way when you work, this is the time to let it down.

3) Accessorise, But Not Too Much

It's always good to accessorise and look put together. Earrings, rings, bracelets or a cute necklace charm. But don't overdo this because you don't want your date to be distracted every time you reach out for that glass of champagne or cut that steak. Pick something that goes with your attire. A simple sparkly necklace charm could do the trick. You could also wear a set of accessories, you know, the ones that come together when you buy them.

4) Proper Dressing

I think most people know and agree with this. Always dress proper where ever you go, but you should keep this in mind even more when going for a candlelight dinner date. Chances are, the restaurant's guests are also going to be well dressed and you don't want to look like Snookie in a sea of elegant Tilda Swintons. I'm not saying wear a gown because while you should be properly dressed for the occasion, you aren't going to a ball and you don't want to scare your date away (picture him wearing FCUK and you wearing a red Valentino). Unless, of course, you are going somewhere that requires a ball gown, in which case he should be in a tuxedo.

5) Shoes That Maketh a Lady

I'm a heels kind of girl so I'd say always wear a pair of heels when heading out to dinner with a guy, especially if it's one of your first dates. However, make sure you wear something comfortable (like Jimmy Choos) because you don't know where the night will lead and how long it's going to be. You might end up going to other places after dinner and you're going to have to walk in those heels. If that happens, you can only blame yourself for choosing the pretty but hurting-as-hell shoes. Some might ask, why heels when you can wear something that's easier to walk in? Well, mainly because heels, rather than flats, usually go better with formal outfits. Also, I'd suggest leaving the Alexander McQueen alligators at home.

This classic Disney movie appeals to children and adults alike. Lady, a Cocker Spaniel, has a happy home with Jim Dear and Darling until her home life is disrupted by the arrival of a new baby. When the couple go away on vacation, lady ends up running away and meeting Tramp, a stray mutt. When Jim Dear and Darling return and find that Lady and the Tramp have saved the baby from a rat that entered the crib; they end up adopting Tramp. Two very different sisters experience their own love stories in this fun film. Bianca wants to date but is told by her resistant father that she can only date if her older sister, Kat, does. The catch is that Kat has no desire to date. Cameron, a boy who is interested in dating Bianca, sets out to find a date for Kat. After resistance from both sides, Kat and the boy Cameron sets her up with end up falling for each other, as do Cameron and Bianca. This movie is both fun and romantic; a great Valentine's Day choice for those who do not want anything too serious.

4. Titanic

In this romantic film, the main character, Rose, recounts the story of her journey on the Titanic. She had boarded the ship with her mother and her fianc�e; but ended up falling in love with an artist named Jack. Rose was forbidden by her mother and fianc�e to see Jack; but the two snuck around just to be together. Jack died following the collision, but Rose survived to tell her story. This film is another story of love persevering despite differences between the two and resistance from family and others.

5. Father of the Bride

Valentine's Day is a romantic day, but love comes in many different types. This is another film that explores more than one type of love; in this case romantic love and the love between a father and a daughter. George, the father, has trouble accepting that his daughter is grown up and getting married, and resists as wedding plans are made. Ultimately, he seems to accept that his daughter, Annie, is grown up. --Job interviews (either as an interviewee or interviewer). In more or less all companies, ties are expected for male prospects and going without a tie may exacerbate questions about the candidate's judgment. Interviewers commonly don ties as well, regardless of whether they typically use neckties at their workplace. Remember, interviewers wish to depict their organization as desirable-in the event that the organization comes off as unreliable, outstanding contenders may very well keep looking.

--Fancy restaurants. Neckties are generally necessary at the fanciest establishments. I would generally encourage utilizing a tie if a meal for two people will most likely run upwards of $50. Likewise, whenever a establishment has a violinist playing, you should have a necktie.

--Whenever you're flying--folks that seem like businessmen are more likely to obtain no-cost upgrades. Businesses (and cab drivers) are frequently friendlier to buyers that seem like substantial spenders.

NEW YORK, New York is the Big Apple. Fortunately, it is not distinguished for its nutrition, but rather as the city with the most bars and clubs in the United States. There are always plenty of parties going on.

SAN FRANCISCO, California, is the city where flower power began half a century ago - and they are still partying, both hipster style and in electronic dance bars from Sausolito to San Jose. Among the top places to party include the Mission and SOMA Districts, as well as North Beach

CALGARY, Alberta, is known as Cowtown because of the famous Calgary Stampede, a 10-day rodeo that draws millions of people to the city. Even if country music culture is not your style, the after-rodeo parties are epic. These days, the Stampede is as much about the parties as it is about the rodeo.

Choosing where to see them can be a tricky decision though; this article will take a look at several of the options, to give you a better idea of where you can experience this magical event.

Norway.

The town of Troms�, located in Norway's far north, is famous for its Aurora Borealis activity. The lights in this region occur long after the extended summer days are gone and it's location above the Arctic Circle, well within the Northern Lights region, is widely known as one of the best places to experience the shimmering lights. The town is well equipped with everything you'd need during your stay here but it's not the only way to experience the lights in this region, there's also the option to cruise Norway's fjord-lined coast and experience the lights out on the open water.

Finland.

Another northern country famed for its access to the Aurora Borealis is Finland. Many who come here head to Luosto in Northern Finland, the location of the Aurora Chalet. The Chalet is famed for its beeper system that alerts guests to the appearance of the Northern Lights, with data feed to the devices from the Northern Lights Research Center in the nearby town, Sodanklya. If that's a little too far north, then the lights can also be enjoyed in the skies over Nellim, a town located close to Finland's third largest lake, Lake Inari; it makes for a great location to see the lights shimmering over the still lake.

Iceland.

Moving away from Scandinavia, our next location is the small island, Iceland. With a capital city that's well known for its nightlife, Iceland makes for a great all round destination to see the Northern Lights. If you want to see the lights while you're here then heading out to the pingvellir National Park. The park is a UNESCO Heritage Site located where the North American and Eurasian continental plates meet, which coincidentally forms a wide open plane perfect for viewing the Aurora Borealis.

Alaska.

The final destination on our list is the other side of the globe, Alaska. Although not as often associated with the Aurora Borealis, the US state is still located well within the Northern Lights region. The best way to see the lights here has to be on a costal cruise, away from the lights of the big cities.

Berry Bliss Smoothie

This is a clear favorite with the kids and kids at heart for breakfast, snack, or on a hot day. Enjoy! It tastes so good that you forget that it's good for you!"

This smoothie contains super foods and flax seed. Blueberries and aronia berries have some of the greatest antioxidant levels you can find in a fruit and flaxseed is a powerhouse for omega-3s and good source of fiber.

2 scoops raspberry sherbet

1 ripe banana

4 strawberries

10 aronia berries

15 blueberries

5 blackberries

16 oz orange juice

1 ½ teaspoons ground flax seed

Put berries in a blender and blend until smooth while slowly adding the orange juice. You can make your smoothie thicker by adding some vanilla ice.

Pour into tall glass and serve chilled.

Blueberry Cake

You can use any berries such as aronia berries, blackberries or other berries, not just blueberries.

Using gluten-free flour makes this recipe good for people who have allergic reaction to gluten. You can make your own gluten-free flour or purchase it at a health food store. If you do not want to make your blueberry cake gluten-free just use regular flour. The use of Fructevia in place of sugar makes this a good desert for diabetics.

2 cups gluten-free flour

2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup blueberries (frozen is fine)

2 tablespoons gluten-free flour

1/2 cup coconut oil or real butter

1/2 cup frictevia

2 eggs

1/2 cup warm milk

1/8 cup fructevia

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray olive oil or other lubricant on a 9-inch-square pan.

Mix the flour, baking powder and salt together in a bowl and set aside. Use 2 tablespoons gluten-free flour to coat blueberries and set it aside. Mix real butter or coconut oil and fructevia in a bowl; add eggs and beat well. Add milk to the dry ingredients and mix then add the blueberries. Put mixture into the prepared pan. Mix furctevia and cinnamon together and sprinkle over the top of the cake. Bake 35 to 40 minutes.

A couple examples of gluten-free flour recipe you can use to make your own flour by grinding your own using a mill such as the Wonder Mill are as follows:

3 cups combined bean flour

3 cups cornstarch

3 cups tapioca starch flour

3 cup rice flour

1/2 tsp. xanthan gum

Another recipe that is not as heavy as the above is:

1 cup rice flour

1/2-3/4 cup potato starch

1/4 cup tapioca starch/flour or corn flour

This is good for coating fried chicken for example.

Milling your own flour is possible using a mill such as a Wonder Mill. There are many reasons you should/would want to grind your own flour for bread baking.

First if you have a mill it you can mill grains and save money. Flours are cheaper when ground at home.

Secondly the quality and flavor you get from home ground flour is better. The flavor simply cannot be duplicated with any commercially available flour.

A third reason you should consider grinding your own grain flours is for the health benefits. All commercially made grain flours have had the germ removed. The germ is the part of the grain that contains healthy nutritious oils.

A fourth reason to consider making your own flour is this will give you access to flours that you might not be able to get otherwise.

BLUEBERRY RICE PUDDING

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups cooked rice

2 cups half and half

3 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 cup fructevia

1/8 teaspoon salt

2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries

whipped cream for garnish

Directions

Fill the prepared custard cups with ¼ cup of rice.

Put half and half, eggs, vanilla, fructevia and salt in medium bowl and beat.

Use the custard mixture to fill custard cups.

Put 1 inch of hot water in large shallow pan containing and put in cups.

Bake for 30 to 40 minutes at 375 degrees or until you can inserted a knife near center it comes out clean.

Cool for about 10 minutes and then unmold.

Use a food processor or blender and Puree the blueberries.

Top custard with pureed blueberries and top this with whipped cream.

As another year ends and a new one begins, it is also a great time to consider adopting a different style, or updating your look. You can, perhaps, even make a style update your new year's resolution. Time to get rid of the hairstyle you have had for the last 5 years, and any item of clothing in your closet that you have not worn in 1 year. (Let's face it, if you didn't wear that Hawaiian print shirt last summer, you won't wear next year, either.)

The first step to updating your style is to make a specific list of what items you wish to replace. If you simply go to the mall with the idea of "buying a whole new wardrobe," you will get overwhelmed and not know where to start. Plus, you are likely to end up with single pieces rather than ensembles and outfits. A shopping list, for example, may look a little something like this:

-1 three piece gray wool pinstripe suit

-1 button down white cotton/poly dress shirt with gray wide set stripes

-2 pairs of khaki chinos, one light and one dark

-1 pair of brown leather oxfords

-1 pair of dark wash denim jeans

- 3 short sleeved cotton polo shirts, 1 purple, 1 green, 1 yellow

Etc.

See how I have noted specific colors and fabrics in this list of items? This is important to do when considering what you wish to shop for. You goal should also be to shop for pieces that can be mixed and matched with each other. As you update your wardrobe, make sure not to overlook other aspects of your appearance. Shaggy facial hair can be instantly aging, as can an outdated hairstyle. Visit a reputable hair salon in your area and inquire with a stylist about a new, modern hairstyle. (Even if it is expensive, it is worth it because you will then basically have a template for future cheaper haircuts.) If you have worn the same pair of glasses frames for more than 5 years, it is time for an update on those as well.

If you want to update your style on the cheap, look for eye-catching accessories that are small pieces but make a large impact. Makeup Artist Kelsey Deenihan for Votre Vu created the look of Kate Bosworth for her press events at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

For the premiere of "Black Rock" at the Sundance Film Festival I prepped Kate's face by using a combination of different Votre Vu products to create the perfect canvas ready for the makeup application.

I started off by massaging "ATTENTIVE Creme de Jour for Sensitive Skin" all over the face and neck. This cream is great because it calms the skin and replenishes moisture - especially in these weather conditions.

To keep the under-eyes moisturized, I lightly smoothed into the skin "Tout le Monde Antioxidant Eye Gelee." Next I applied Votre Vu Sensational Eyes Eye Primer in Medium on lids for a perfect way to keep eye shadow on all day - the perfect base.To finish prepping the face for
makeup I dabbed a drop of the "Attentive Serum Delicat Pour Le Visage" into the skin and massaged starting at the center of the face and moving outward.Kate has amazing skin so she really doesn't need a heavy foundation. To set the foundation I dusted on Votre Vu Mineral Powder in Light all over the face.

For the premiere I wanted Kate's makeup to be fresh and natural but with a bold classic red lip. The perfect base for the lipstick is the Votre Vu Champagne Kisses Lip Treatment. I didn't line Kate's lips so the Champagne Kisses pulled double duty by moisturizing and preventing the lipstick from bleeding out.

Today with Kate we started off by prepping the face similar as I did last evening.
Kate was doing a full day of press for her movie "Black Rock" here at Sundance so we needed the skin to be extremely hydrated to prevent the makeup from looking heavy...especially in this freezing dry air. Hairstylist David Stanwell for Leonor Greyl created the look of Dreama Walker and
Helen Hunt for their premieres at the Sundance Film Festival.

For Dreama Walker’s premiere of “Compliance”, I went over her unwashed hair lightly with Leonor Greyl’s Serum de Soie Sublimateur so that I could go through and re-curl the hair without damaging. I created a soft beach wave with a braid in the front, which is a good way to keep the hair off her face.

For Helen Hunt’s look for the premiere of “The Surrogate”, I used Leonor Greyl’s Mousse Au Lotus Volumatrice and the Laque Souple light hairspray to lightly blow dry the hair.

Being the second day without washing, I lightly dampened the hair then sparingly
applied the Mousse Au Lotus Volumatrice to define the hair with a loose wave.

I lightly sprayed the hair with Laque Souple to keep it intact then added the Serum de Soie Sublimateur to the ends and she was ready. The look lasted through snow and wind!

On our very first Valentine's Day as dating couple, I wanted to prepare a very special romantic meal designed to woo and impress the man who is now my husband. I was head over heels in love and only the best would do. Only one problem... I was rich with ideas but extremely poor on funds. In fact I only had $20.00 to my name at the time ($10.00 of which I needed to put gas in my car) and a few staples on hand. I was not sure what I could do with that, but I had already invited him over so I was determined to find a creative way to pull off a romantic dinner for 2.

And then scanning the daily newspaper and praying for inspiration, I found an ad for a local store that had boneless skinless chicken breasts on sale for 89 cents per pound. While I still wasn't sure what I was going to cook, I figured boneless skinless chicken breasts were a good starting point. Surely I could come up with something using the staples I had at home and the chicken breasts. So I immediately headed out to the store and was able to score 3 pounds of chicken breasts for less than $3.00, a package of spaghetti noodles for $1.50 and a day old loaf of Italian bread marked down to 99 cents. I had some parmesan cheese at home and a few frozen veggies so I figured I could at least make some type of light pasta dish.

The recipe I came up with turned out to be a keeper and one that I make each year for our Valentine's dinner to commemorate that very first time. The best part is we can avoid the crowds and the expense of eating out (although we DO usually do lunch at a restaurant). Total cost is only about $8.00 to $10.00 if you catch the chicken breasts on sale. Nowadays I buy large quantities ahead whenever such a sale occurs and freeze the chicken breasts in packages of 4-6 for future meals. Anyway, here is the menu I came up with: Parmesan chicken and pasta, roasted Brussels sprouts, and garlic bread. He brought over a nice bottle of Chardonnay and we had a romantic dinner by candlelight. Nothing fancy for dessert. Just some ice cream I already had in the freezer; however, if I had known of a way to add a fancy dessert to the menu in those days without going over my lean budget, I would have surely made one. The rest is history as we have been married for nearly 9 years now.

Parmesan Chicken and Pasta for Two

Ingredients:

8 ounces of spaghetti noodles

2 boneless skinless chicken breasts cut into 1" cubes

2 tablespoons of cooking oil

1 cup of frozen peas

1 cup of low fat Italian salad dressing

1 teaspoon of garlic powder

1 teaspoon of dried oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

A pinch of reed pepper (optional)

1 cup of parmesan cheese

Directions:

Cook the spaghetti according to the directions on the package

In a steamer basket steam the peas over the boiling spaghetti for 2-3 minutes

In a medium skillet brown the chicken breasts cubes in the cooking oil just until it is no longer pink

Drain the spaghetti and place it in a medium sauce pan

Add the peas and the chicken to the spaghetti and mix well

Add the Italian dressing and the seasonings to the chicken and pasta mixture and toss until well coated.

Mix about � cup of the parmesan cheese into the chicken pasta mixture and toss to evenly distribute the cheese throughout.

Simmer on low heat, stirring frequently, just long enough to heat all the way through

Sprinkle the remaining � cup of cheese on top and serve

Roasted Brussels sprouts

Ingredients:

8-10 ounces of frozen Brussels Sprouts

� - 1 teaspoon of salt ( use sea salt)

� teaspoon of black pepper

� teaspoon of garlic powder

� teaspoon of onion powder

� teaspoon of dried oregano

� teaspoon of dried basil

(This is the seasoning combination I use. You may use whatever you like)

1 tablespoon of olive oil

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees on the roast setting (if your oven has one)

Spray a small baking dish with cooking spray

In mixing bowl toss the Brussels sprouts with the seasoning and then the oil until thoroughly coated

Place the Brussels sprouts in the baking dish in single layer

Roast for 30-40 minutes or until they appear slightly charred on the outside

Garlic Bread

Ingredients:

� cup of butter or margarine (1/2 stick) melted

� cup of olive oil

3 cloves garlic, finely minced

1 (1 pound) loaf of Italian or French bread, halved lengthwise

2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

Mix the melted butter with the olive oil and the garlic

Brush the garlic mixture evenly on the cut sides of the bread

Bake the bread on a cookie sheet (cut sides up) at 350 for about 8 minutes

Switch the oven to the broiler setting and broil the bread about 6 inches from the broiler for about 2 minutes or until golden brown.

Sprinkle with parsley and serve

Americano: This drink is a combination of a single shot espresso and seven ounces of hot water. The name is derived from an insult to rude Americans who were not able to drink full espresso.

Black Coffee: Brewed by drip method, this type of coffee is prepared with French press style or with a percolator. The coffee is served with no milk.

Caf� au Lait: This type is very similar to Caf� Latte. The difference is that Caf� au Lait is prepared with brewed coffee as a substitute to espresso. In addition, the ratio of coffee to milk is 1:1 thus making the taste less intense.

Caf� Breva: This is one variety of cappuccino. The difference between the two is that it is made of half and half milk and not full milk. The half and half milk gives a creamier and richer flavor than the whole milk. If you are preparing this type of coffee at home you should be aware that it is harder to foam half and half milk than full milk.

Caffe Latte: Basically this type is made of one shot of espresso and steamed milk, the milk is not frothed. The ratio used of milk to coffee is 3:1.

Caf� Macchiato: One shot of espresso with steamed milk. As you notice this is very close to Caffe Latte with the exception that the ratio of coffee to milk is 4:1.

Cappuccino: This is a combination of equal portions of coffee, frothed milk, and steamed milk. Flaked chocolate or cinnamon is usually sprinkled on the top. Some coffee shops increase the quantity of milk used so that the customer gets a bigger cup. This will make the taste of coffee lighter than it should be.

Double, or Double Shot: As the name implies this is double the quantity of espresso mixed with milk. To prepare a double shot put two shots of espresso in your coffee cup and drip mix together.

Dry Cappuccino: Less popular than the regular cappuccino. This variety comes with less foam and without any steamed milk.

Espresso Con Panna: Your regular espresso with whipped cream at the top.

Flavored Coffee: This can be any variation that is added to alter the plain flavor of your coffee. It comes in different forms such as syrups or spices. The most popular is the chocolate and cinnamon.

The different types of coffee drinks that I have mentioned in this article are not all what you can find in coffee shops. The variety that you see shows how much popular coffee is as a beverage. A great suggestion for Valentine's is to cook a surprise, relatively simple meal that the basic cook can pull together with a little planning and lots of excitement. If you're cooking for more than two, double the recipe and enjoy with friends. While the names may sound spectacular, the process is quite simple and won't break the bank. All of the recipes are included below.

You might ask me "Alison, why cook from scratch when I can buy all this stuff in a box or can?" Trust me here - the flavors of real cooking can't be beaten. There are few things in the world more important to me than making whole, nutritious food for my family. I cook in love, and enjoy mealtime with my friends, family and people in general. I actually want to love these folks - feeding my husband a leading brand of Alfredo also gives him about 1000% of sodium he's allow to have each day. That is like asking to collect on life insurance. It just takes a few minutes of preplanning, and the actually assembly of your love feast isn't hard to pull off. In addition, your love will really appreciate the time and effort that went into your effort. A second note - if you are a Parmesan Asiago cheese lover, you can sub that mixture for straight Parmesan in any of the following. It does give it a stronger, beautiful flavor.

Begin your week by forming a shopping list of what you need in contrast to what you have. A note about olive oil...unless you use if often, it does tend to go stale. Taste your oil if you've had it for a while, just a quick taste from your index finger well coated with a the freshly shaken bottle. If it tastes stale or rancid, toss it. Olive oil will permeate every facet of this meal; you cannot use stale product. I chose this classic meal because the love of my life adores Fettuccine Alfredo with grilled herb chicken breast crusted in Parmesan cheese. In addition to the creaminess of Alfredo, there is the quintessential necessity of Bruchetta Crostini, a regular staple in my cooking diet, and one of my all time favorite foods. I've reved up the recipe to include whole ingredients that counteract his sometimes not so healthy diet and liberal use of carbonated sodas, gummy bears...you get the idea. While Bruchetta may sound scary if you've never partaken, note that the pickiest human being in the world, my youngest daughter, pronounces it "delicious." This is like a blessing directly from heaven.

What is Bruchetta? It's tomato, onion, garlic and other stuff on a toasted slice of bread with Parmesan cheese, served piping hot. It's way great to nibble, not hard to make. Begin by making the Bruchetta mix the day prior. This works well in a disposable plastic dish that has a tight sealing lid. The ingredients are going to permeate the plastic, so unless you plan to make more, it's going to stain the interior with garlic and tomato rendering it useless. For two people, you want to dice two well sized, firm red tomatoes, one half sweet yellow onion and about 2/3 cup basil pesto. I make my own pesto from fresh basil greens, almonds, olive oil, garlic and salt each summer, then save it in frozen sealed packages for the remainder of the year. Retail basil pesto will work well; you may need a bit more garlic than the recipe calls for. If you have access to fresh basil, you can also make your own. Small dice the tomato, onion, and add about four tablespoons of fresh or commercially diced garlic. Season with a quarter cup of Parmesan cheese and the pesto. Mix well with about a half teaspoon of salt and about 1/5 cup olive oil; cover tightly and let rest for at least 24-48 hours in refrigeration. Don't overdo the salt; you cannot remove it, and it will permeate over the resting period. A few hours before you're going to start dinner, take this out and let it come to room temp on it's own. Leave it sealed but give it a shake now and then. If you're a pepper lover, finely chop a medium to small green bell pepper (core and seed it) and add it with the onion.

The Crostini is simple to make, and the last thing to come out of the oven. How to prepare? Purchase a baguette and slice into very thin strips. It's great to also buy the baguette presliced if they carry it in your local bakery or grocery store. You can actually brown the Crostini early, as you wait for the remainder of the ingredients to come together. It's relatively simple: brush the bread on each side with a very light olive oil or butter. Broil on one side until barely golden. Resist the temptation to brown it, as you're going to cook it again later. Flip the gold side to allow the pale side to face the broiler. Shake powdered Parmesan onto the bread, and return it to the boiler for only two minutes or so, at 300 degrees or less, just enough to allow the cheese to melt. Remove from heat, and spoon about a tablespoon of Bruchetta mix onto each bread, adjusting to allow for adequate coverage without stacking the tomato mix to highly. Once you've filled each bread, you should cover each with Parmesan cheese again. Toast in the broiler on a low setting until browned.

Alfredo sauce is another pre-prep item that you can make the day prior and save yourself grief. It also freezes well. A great Alfredo consists of few ingredients: half and half, butter, garlic, white wine, and Parmesan cheese. Begin by slowly bringing 2 cups of half and half nearly to a gentle boil; you'll need to stir it frequently. Incorporate a cup of white wine (chardonnay works well) and about one half cup garlic (commercial mince) and a pinch of salt. I add 1/8 cup of real, unsalted butter to make the flavors rich; you can leave this out if you want to reduce the fat. As the milk mixture heats, incorporate 2 cups of grated Parmesan cheese (fine powder texture) with a whisk. It's important not to dump all of the cheese in a once, unless you want a congealed mass of nasty stuff you can't eat. Slowly, with patience and a steady mixing hand. Note to the novice cook: don't use a whisk on your loved one's Teflon pan. It will scratch it. Use a temperature resistant plastic or wood spatula. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil and stir frequently. It needs to simmer for about fifteen minutes or so, and will thicken. If you want less bite, add more milk. If you make the day prior, you will need to bring it to temperature and add a little half and half for the proper consistency.

Fettuccine noodles, surprisingly, are often made in advance in great restaurants like my former Flatrock Grill. Make your desired quantity of pasta to the al dente stage - drain into a colander and pour cold water on it to halt the cooking process. Coat it in olive oil and seal until you're ready to serve. To prepare it for the table, immerse in boiling water for about sixty seconds, longer if you want it soft. Drain again and mix with the Alfredo.

Grilling the chicken is really best left for mealtime, although you can also prepare in advance. Chicken loses it's moisture when it is reheated, but you can refresh it in boiling water as well. Easiest bet for the chicken? Cut breast meat into strips and season with basic Italian spices like basil, oregano and a little Parmesan powder. Bring a heavy non stick skillet to hot with olive oil (don't get it smoking hot, olive oil isn't great at high temps) and add the chicken to the oil. For three boneless, skinless chicken breasts, you can also add a few tablespoons of garlic to saute; it keeps all of the flavors consistent.

What you need:

Quart half and half

Bottle white wine (nothing too sweet, use a chardonnay or Pinot Grigo - something you would drink.)

Commercial minced garlic (about a cup total)

1/2 stick unsalted butter

Salt

3 cups Parmesan cheese (grated)

Fettuccine noodles

Fresh extra virgin olive oil

Basil pesto

2-3 boneless skinless chicken breasts

Italian spices

Crostini bread (thin cut baguette)

2 larger, red firm tomatoes

1 medium, yellow sweet onion

(optional: green bell pepper)

I plan to serve this for family dinner when all the kids are home this weekend, paired with a freshly tossed salad full of greens, olives and tomato, a saute of fresh broccoli, a great bottle of Italian white and lots of crusty bread to dip in olive oil and garlic. For dessert I am going a little professional chef with a filled Cannoli and a red velvet cake that T and I will make together for the fun of it.

The reason that Cooking for Love rules in my book? It gives you the chance to sit over a common table, laugh and talk with those that you love and create moments of memory. Life, as it turns out, is a collage of those moments that will see you through the tougher times. In that, it's as big a gift to you as it is those that you love.

Not all visitors make the best of their holidays though, unwittingly missing out on some of the region's unfamiliar treasures and off beat sites. When you stay in one of the many wonderful villas in Tuscany, they provide easy access to the region's many riches. Here are some that you should definitely look out for.

Pianosa Island

One of the seven islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, Pianosa was formally used as a prison for exceptionally dangerous convicts. When the prison was closed in 1998, Pianosa, along with the other six Tuscan islands, became the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago. Like the other islands, it is a protected wildlife sanctuary. Its striking beauty has made it a tourist attraction, but only 250 tourists can visit the island per day, and tours are supervised. During your time holidaying in villas in Tuscany, you can easily head out for a tour to Pianosa Island. Its breathtaking coastline is dotted with picturesque coves and inlets and you'll also see the remnants of the abandoned port and buildings. Pianosa was written in to the pages of history when its most famous prisoner, Agrippa Postumas, was exiled to a villa on the island by his grandfather, Emperor Augustus in 9 AD. Postumas was later executed and the ruins of the villa remain to this day. Pianosa was also widely popularised when author Joseph Heller used it as a setting for his famed work 'Catch 22.'

Vie Cave

While staying in your villas in Tuscany, you should venture to the beautiful town of Pitigliano, where you'll discover the mysterious Vie Cave. The Vie Cave (which means sunken roads) consists of narrow paths dug out of stone by the Etruscans. No one knows for sure how the Etruscans dug these pathways, with walls as high as 25 metres tall, or what their function was. One theory is that they were used as water channels or sacred paths leading to burial grounds or other sacred sites. As you manoeuvre your way through these enchanting pathways, you'll notice mysterious wall markings and half-concealed tombs.

Bagno Vignoni

Located in Tuscany's Val d'Orcia National Park, Bagno Vignoni is a living testament to Tuscany's historical past - rich with remnants of its cultural practises. Champagne is that missing piece that every party should have. You don't have to open a champagne bottle only several times per year for New Year's Eve or a wedding. You can drink it every time you throw a party. It's not like you're going to buy the most expensive champagne at your supermarket. There are different sorts of champagne just for smaller occasions, like a simple party. In this article you'll find out how to cherish champagne at every party. First, we'll discuss about champagne brands and which suit best. Secondly, we'll talk about what to eat with champagne and finally, we'll write about making champagne mixtures.

Some champagne brands are more suitable for parties than other ones. You don't have to buy a pricey Heidsieck or Dom Perignon at each party, unless you have a rather luxurious lifestyle, but you can get a great champagne brand like Moet et Chandon at about $14 per bottle. For a regular party, purchasing 6-7 bottles will be enough. Pick different types of champagne. Choose Blanc de Blanc, which is quite popular; always pick a Rose and a Sec. How many bottles of champagne you're going to get of each sort is up to you to settle.

Get some food that goes well with sparkling wine. Homemade food would be perfect, only make sure to also bring some of the following: a good French cheese, fish (salmon would be perfect), oysters (eat them with Blanc de Blanc), and sweets, especially chocolate, fruits, muffins, cream cake and ice cream. If you want to get creative make some home-baked chocolate and for a touch of sophistication, bring some caviar. Moreover, you can get some Chinese food or turkey and chicken. Self-serve bar. Put the foods close to the champagne, which should be inside the ice buckets. Start with seafood and a Medium-dry champagne and keep the Rose for the sweets. In between, you should prepare some cocktails. The bubbly taste of champagne is perfect for cocktails. Mix some juice with champagne and add some fresh fruit pulp for some delicious mixtures. Prepare a Bellini cocktail by mixing peach pulp (or juice) with champagne. If you want the traditional Bellini, use Prosecco. So if you're into traditional cocktails, have a bottle of Prosecco ready.

Throwing a champagne party is quite fun as long as you know what champagne brands are symbols of quality and still not very expensive.. You can have a very cute party with quality champagne without having to buy the most expensive champagne at your supermarket.

I like to think that I'm on the forefront of beauty and makeup trends, but when my friend Maria informed him that guyliner isn't a Mediterranean cruise ship I was puzzled. Turns out it 's a term used to describe the stuff that some guys like to apply to their eyelashes. In other words - eyeliner!

I punched "guyliner" into the search box at urbandictionary.com and found the following definition:

"Eyeliner applied on a man. Once formerly the territory of only homosexuals, punk rockers and showmen, well-applied guyliner is slowly but surely becoming more socially acceptable for heterosexual men who ascribe to metrosexualism, glamour, and general fabulousness."

Wow! Guess I've been living under a rock for a while! But, heck, the practice of guys dressing up their lashes with eyeliner isn't exactly a groundbreaking discovery in the world of beauty and makeup. It's been taking the fashion world by storm since 4,000 B.C. That's when the pharaohs of ancient Egypt liked to apply green and black liner to their eyelashes and eyebrows.

And let's not forget 1920's screen legend and heart throb to millions of women, Rudolph Valentino. He wore so much eyeliner in his silent movies that an editorial in the Chicago Tribune accused him of "effeminization of the American male." This apparently ticked Valentino off, and in order to defend his manhood, he challenged the reporter to a boxing match. Unfortunately, the movie star died in New York City before this could happen.

The list of celebrities using guyliner didn't stop with Valentino, and include Kurt Cobain, Johnny Depp and more recently rocker Brandon Flowers of the group Killers. You're in good company if this born-again trend appeals to your sense of style. I have to admit that it adds some spice to the otherwise drab parade of civil servants in grey flannel pants that walk past my coffee shop everyday.

Any guy who is confident enough to use eyeliner, is a guy who probably won't have a problem dropping by the local cosmetic counter to pick up one of the many popular brands made for women. But why should they have all the fun? A number of smart companies have recognized this trend and are marketing eyeliner especially branded for the male market.

Guyliner typically comes in the form of a khol pencil that is designed to create a subtle, but defined look to the contours of a guy's eyes. Some folks selling this stuff claim it will make eyes appear "more dramatic, larger and seductive." Wow! That's a powerful pencil. The few guyliner products that are available are inexpensive when compared to similar products that women use. Isn't that always the case!

My boyfriend could definitely use a bit of an edge. I think I'm going to grab him some guyliner!
